Why Im Sharing

Why Im Sharing Why Im Sharing Weve been working on a new site design for blueskyresumes.com for a while. We started by clarifying our brand, we then went on to site strategy thinking through everything we want the site to do for us and for our visitors and now were in the design phase, where that stuff is coming together page-by-page.Im so excited about it I cant even tell youOne feature that of the new site will be a really amazing resume samples section that Im elend going to give away just yet, but which will be pretty special.Im always surprised when I go to another resume services website and find that they dont have any samples on display. Our samples are our single biggest sales tool not to mention the source of the vast majority of our search engine traffic. Why would you give that opportunity up?The answer of course, is that some resume writers are afraid their ideas will be stolen by others. They feel that by sharing, they will have lost something.I feel the opposite. I feel that sharing brings you more. I think that the more you put out into the world, the more comes back to you. Will somebody copy one of your resume designs if you put it on the web? Probably. So what? They cant copy the originality and talent behind that one resume. They cant translate the ideas for themselves. And even if they could so what again? What have you actually lost?I always knew this, but it crystallized for me when I took Brian Clarks Teaching Sells course last year, and then again this year when I read Trust Agents by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith. Both approach the subject from a different angle, but both put forth the basic premise that to be trusted, you must give. Both say that you wont lose money if you share your knowledge that in fact, you and your business will benefit by sharing freely with others.I know theyre right. And heres one way I know earlier this year I had a fantastic opportunity for another resume writer. I needed to find a relative unknown in the industry, but someone who had great potential. The opportunity paid well and offered fantastic exposure. So I went hunting on the web. The first place I looked was at the websites of resume writers I follow on Twitter. I wanted to binnensee their work and judge whether I should contact them. And yet 90% of them had no samples available.90% of them lost out on a great opportunity because they were unwilling to share Now multiply that by every client who comes to their site interested in a new resume, but leaves because she cant see any examples of work. And every journalist researching a story. And every potential strategic partner. For me, its a no brainer. Im going to share as much as I can wherever I can. I think that it will all come back to me. And if someone steals a resume design I created, well, good luck with it. I hope it gets you a great jobWhat about you do you share your knowledge or are you a hoarder?

Adorable Latvian cat interrupts mayors interview

Adorable Latvian cat interrupts mayors interviewAdorable Latvian cat interrupts mayors interviewIf you know cats, you know they consider few things more important than their personal comfort. Government business? Nothing to a cat.The cat-loving mayor of Riga, Latvias capital, discovered this anew as he was on camera during a weekly, online QA session yesterday when a catdecided it was the perfect time to make a cameo appearance, according to ABC News. But the furry creature didnt just stealthily crawl in and out of the picture, trying not to be seen or heard. No- that just wouldnt do.About 17 minutes into the session conducted byNils Uakovs, the kitty boldly strolled in and took a sip from the mayors mug. Actually, several sips.Showing a keen knowledge of cat behavior, the mayorwaited patiently for it to have its fill, and just stared at the furry intruder with bemusement. He reached out to pet the cat and it jumped away. And just like that,Uakovs continued, as if nothing had even happ ened. But the mayors calm demeanor during this encounter makes sense, as does the the cats sense of entitlement the feline that crashed his interview was one of two that was adopted and has been living in the town hall since 2011, according to ABC.Of course, we dont know how this will affect the cats performance review.

Understanding Project and Task Dependencies

Understanding Project and Task DependenciesUnderstanding Project and Task DependenciesProject Managers reference project dependencies as the relationships between individual tasks in a projectdiagram. Preceding tasks must be completed before moving on to the next or succeeding tasks. All of the tasks required to achieve the projects scope are sequenced according to their dependencies for each other, and then resources are linked to the tasks and a project schedule constructed. The project or task dependencies are critical for the following Sequencing the work packages (tasks) in a project plan.Calculating the critical path (longest path/duration) of tasks in a project plan.Identifying resource and scheduling issues and making supporting decisions.Monitoring and managing as part of the overall project plan.Identifying opportunities to accelerate the schedule via fast-tracking or crashing. Examples of Project Task Dependencies While the analysis of task dependencies for a large pro ject is a complex task often requiring computer software, consider a few simple examples to illustrate the concept. Example 1 Making Coffee Imagine getting out of bed in the morning, yawning, and making your way to the kitchen to discover that you forgot to preset your coffeemaker to brew automatically. It is now up to you to shake off the sleep and start the coffee brewing. You know that you need to complete the following tasks Add waterGrind the coffee beansMeasure the coffee into the filterAdd a coffee filterPlace the carafe on the heating trayPress brew Of course, there is a proper order to this process. You would not press brew before completing all of the other steps. A proper sequence of events taking into account dependencies might be as follows Grind the coffee beansAdd a coffee filterMeasure the coffee into the filterAdd waterPlace the carafe on the heating trayPress brew. In this sequence of tasks, you could not measure the coffee into the filter before you ground the bea ns. Grinding the coffee beans is a predecessor activity for measuring the coffee into the filter. The measuring step is a succeeding activity. All of the tasks are predecessor activities to the step Press brew. Example 2 Installing a Lawn Sprinkling System in a Brand New House Important tasks for this include Install the sod (lawn).Dig the trenches for and install the sprinkling system hoses.Locate the sprinkler heads.Grade the lot.Fill the trenches. The proper sequence of events taking into account task dependencies is as follows Grade the lot.Locate the sprinkler heads.Dig the trenches for and install the sprinkling system hoses.Fill the trenchesInstall the lawn. Understanding the dependencies in this example allows the landscaper to plan for grading and digging equipment, ensuring the availability of supplies and scheduling the proper resource for each step. Types of Project Planning Dependencies There are four types ofproject planningdependencies. They establish relationship s among the tasks. Below, they are listed in the order most often used Finish-to-start (FS) The first task must complete before the second task can start. For example, the task Write code module 1 must finish before the task test code module 1 can begin.Finish-to-finish (FF) The second task cannot finish before the first task finished. The task all code tested cannot finish before the task test code module x finishes.Start-to-start (SS) The second task doesnt start until the first task starts. The task write training manual must start before the task write chapter 1 of the training manual can start. Start-to-finish (SF) The first task must start before the second task can finish. The task assign coder for module 3 must start before the task all work assigned can finish. Categories of Project Planning Dependencies There are also dependencies with other projects. Planning dependencies fall into three categories logical, resource-based, or preference. Below are three types of proje ct planning dependencies Logical planning dependencies ansicht are dependencies that are logic-driven. You cant paint a wall before its built. You cant test a code module until after its written.Resource-based planning dependenciesThese are dependencies where the task could be accomplished faster or sooner if you had more resources. The manual could be written faster if you had more than one writer. You could write more code except all the other developers are committed to other projects.Preference planning dependenciesThese are tasks that could be scheduled differently, but the project manager chooses to schedule this particular order. The Bottom Line Project managers must be able to plan for and manage the dependencies among tasks in their projects. Dependencies impact scheduling and resource activities, and it is critical to understand these relationships when looking for opportunities to improve the project schedule. Updated by Art Petty

Spark a Conversation Connecting With Introverts Through Video Interviews - Spark Hire

Spark a Conversation Connecting With Introverts Through Video Interviews - Spark HireHere at Spark Hire, we want to help companies utilize the power of online video to find the best candidates. We get a lot of questions from readers about best practices for using online video in the hiring process. These posts will address those questions about how to find your next superstar employee.Question How can I connect with introverted candidates in the video einstellungsgesprch? -Samantha from Boulder Thank you for your question, Samantha Great employees come in all different varieties and types. An introvert in a video interview may not seem like the best person for the job- especially juxtaposed with that bubbly, extroverted candidate. However, being extroverted does not make a better employee. Just like being introverted doesnt mean they will be a poor employee. The truth is, introverts can bring a lot to the table and have a myriad of skills you can harvest. Its true that it may be more difficult for introverted candidates to express themselves during the interview, so realize first that they are probably outside of their comfort zone. Introverts generally like to keep to themselves and may have a tough time talking about all of their skills and what makes them a great employee. If you feel as though you have an introverted candidate that would be great for the job then you just have to dig a little deeper in the video interview. Here are some things you can do to make the process a bit easier for both you and the introverted job seeker.Ask the Right QuestionsThis rings true for any job interview but its especially important when dealing with introverted candidates. If you notice your candidate is a bit more shy than the average job seeker then try asking interview questions focused on specific skills, qualifications and experience. Introverts perform better in the job interview when they have something specific to discuss rather than simply trying to answer broad interview questions about themselves. For instance, the question, Tell me a bit about yourself may leave an introvert stumbling while a question like, So what do you think your past experience has taught you thus far gives them specifics to discuss.Keep to Those SpecificsGoing along with the above tip, try and stick to discussing their skills and certain specifics rather than have them talk about themselves in general. Not that introverts lack confidence, but generally speaking they are not the first ones to toot their own horn. While extroverts usually have no problem telling you why they are great, introverts will usually struggle with this upon first meeting- like fruchtwein job interviews so often are. That is why sticking to specifics will help them pinpoint what it is you really want them to discuss. If you want to know how they work in a team setting ask them specifically to describe when they worked in a team setting last. How did it go? What did they learn about themselves and how they operate as an employee?Interviewing introverts can be difficult sometimes since the one-on-one grill session is what most introverts try to avoid. However, you should not pass over a candidate simply because they are a bit introverted. They can bring much and more to the table and deserve as much consideration as their extroverted counterparts.Do you have a question you need answered? 3 Key Tips to Improve Your Resume Layout

3 Key Tips to Improve Your Resume Layout 3 Key Tips to Improve Your Resume Layout Keywords. Skills. Proper resume fonts. Measurable results. There are many components that a resume absolutely must have in this age of applicant tracking systems (ATS). With so much energy spent on content, its easy to forget about the importance of presentingthat content through a solid resume layout. When asked by Huff Post Business to identify terrible resume mistakes, an HR associate at the securities firm EquiLend offered, It does not matter where you are in terms of your experience level, but to me poor formatting just suggests that you did not pay attention to what you were doing and shows me your lack of interest. This advice sounds good on the surface, but what exactly does poor formatting mean? Here are 3keys to a good layout- and how you can use them to unlock a professional, effective resume.1. Keep it clean. Becausethe average recruiter only takes aboutseven seconds to review a resume, its te mpting to include as many eye-catching features as possible in order to keep their attention. Charts Graphs A veritable rainbow of font colorsHowever, this presumes that those of the human persuasion will be the only ones reviewing your resume- which is unfortunately untrue. The applicant tracking systems mentioned above save employers time, but present some hurdles for job seekers. One issue is that only some ATS can recognize tables, columns, or various other graphic elements. To be on the safe side, your resume instead shouldinclude clean lines and a different (non-neon) font color to highlight job titles, opines Maele Hargett, an executive recruiter with Ascendo Resources.2. Keep it uniform. If youve been copying and pasting into a resume from your career management document, there may be some small inconsistencies that have escaped your notice. Combat this in one of two ways either a) paste text into Windows Notepad/TextEdit for a Mac to get rid of any formatting, or b) use the Clear All Formatting button in Microsoft Word.Bullet points should all be the same size and the paragraph style needs to be consistent across the board. Remember that once your resume does get past the ATS, it will be seen by ahuman recruiter- and if the resume sections are cramped or look starkly different from one another, youre makingit hard for that recruiter to notice your talents. If your resume looks sloppy, potential employers will think you are, too.Microsoft Words Clear All Formatting button is a good tool to use in keeping your resume layout clean.3. Keep your options open.If youd rather let someone else do the layoutwork, use a resume templateTemplates make it easy to properly showcase your skills, experience, and accomplishments. Be cautious though, and dont use just any old template. Manyavailable options come pre-loaded with graphics and charts, which weve already established can throw offapplicant tracking systems. So where can one find an uncluttered, yet eye-catchin g template? Jobscan has compiled 20 high quality, ATS-friendly templates that we encourage you to explore here. Best of all, theyre free- a far cry from the $99 price tag on some resume templatesJobscan gives you the best of both worlds resume analysis and free templatesResume layout is a subtle but important parte of creating the document that tells your career story. The Butterfly Pavilion (in Colorado) offers entomology zookeeper internships during spring, summer, or fall sessions.  Interns work 1 to 3 days per week (approximately 6 to 24 hours per week).  Duties include animal care and husbandry, exhibit cleaning and maintenance, ensuring USDA compliance, educating the public, and completing an independent project.  Applicants must be students or graduates with a degree in biology, education, or a related field.  This is an unpaid opportunity but college credit may be arranged. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (in Ohio) offers the Kirtlandia Research Internship Program which focuses on insect systematics.  These 8-week internships are paid opportunities, with interns being paid $7.95 per hour plus up to $200 to fund a research project that is presented at the conclusion of the experience.  Most projects require both field work and lab work.  Applications are due in early March. The Cockrell Butterfly Center, part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, offers a paid summer internship that is funded by the Garden Club of Houston.  The summer internship runs for 10 to 12 weeks.  Interns learn about butterfly identification, breeding, pest control, and habitat maintenance (primarily horticultural work).  They also do some public speaking and lead outreach programs for children and adults.  This internship opportunity offers a stipend of approximately $4,500. Paradise Meadows Orchard and Bee Farm offers a bee internship in Hawaii that focuses on tropical apiary management.  Interns must be willing to work 5 to 6 days per week for at least six months.  Duties may include construction and repair of hives, pest control, harvesting and bottling honey, splitting hives, and monitoring hive health.  The internship is unpaid but Paradise Meadow provides free housing (including satellite TV/internet), partial board, transportation to and from work, and a bee suit. Reiman Gardens, a part of Iowa State University, offers an entomology internship that runs from mid-May to early August.  Interns assist the Butterfly Wing curator with colony maintenance, processing chrysalis shipments, raising tropical and native butterfly species, and providing information to visitors.  Interns also work in a USDA regulated laboratory environment.  Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university.  This is a paid internship opportunity, with a pay rate of $8 per hour. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History offers several internships related to entomology including options in insect specimen curation, imaging, molecular techniques, preparation and identification, and more.  Interns may be involved with taking digital photos, identifying specimens, preparing and labeling specimens, and entering information into databases.  Internships are unpaid and time commitments vary. Walt Disney World offers the Entomology Disney Professional Internship program at the Epcot Center in Florida.  Interns work in the agricultural greenhouses that are part of the Living with the Land exhibit.  They are involved with leading tours, maintaining insect colonies, assisting with pest monitoring, and participating in classes and training sessions.  Applicants must be college students or recent graduates with a major in an entomology related area.  Internships are paid six-month opportunities.  Housing or relocation assistance may also be provided.

Its Tax Time Make Sure You Deduct Qualifying Federal Resume Writing Expenses!

It’s Tax Time â€" Make Sure You Deduct Qualifying Federal Resume Writing Expenses! It’s Tax Time â€" Make Sure You Deduct Qualifying Federal Resume Writing Expenses! It’s Tax Time â€" Make Sure You Deduct Qualifying Federal Resume Writing Expenses! Good news! Your job search expenses may be tax deductible. Here are the top six things the IRS wants you to know about deducting costs related to your job search. 1. IRS: You can deduct certain expenses you have in looking for a new job in your present occupation, even if you do not get a new job. You cannot deduct these expenses if: You are looking for a job in a new occupation. (IRS Publication 529, Job Search Expenses) My comment: The federal government is NOT a new occupation, it is a new employer. If you are looking for a federal job related to your previous position, you may be able to deduct your expenses. The key is whether you are looking for positions requiring some of the same transferable skills from your past position to your new position. For instance, management/leadership skills are the same from private industry to federal government accounting skills are the same research and analysis skills are the same customer services is the same, etc. 2. IRS: You can deduct employment and outplacement agency fees you pay in looking for a new job in your present occupation. My comment: The Resume Place, Inc. is considered an employment and outplacement agency, so any fees you incur enlisting our help with your federal job search would meet this criteria. Qualifying fees include our federal resume services, federal career consulting services, federal career training, and books. 3. IRS: You can deduct amounts you spend for preparing and mailing copies of a resume to prospective employers if you are looking for a new job in your present occupation. My comment: Remember to save your receipts for portfolios, envelopes, stamps, faxing, rented computer time, or any other expenses related to writing and sending your resume. 4. IRS: If you travel to an area and, while there, you look for a new job in your present occupation, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area. You can deduct the travel expenses if the trip is primarily to look for a new job. The amount of time you spend on personal activity compared to the amount of time you spend in looking for work is important in determining whether the trip is primarily personal or is primarily to look for a new job. My comment: If you drive to The Resume Place, Inc. for in-person consultation or to attend one of our training courses, your travel expenses may be tax deductible. 5. IRS: You cannot deduct job search expenses if there was a substantial break between the end of your last job and the time you begin looking for a new one. My comment: The IRS did not define how long a substantial break is, but even if you have been out of work for awhile, you may still be able to deduct the expenses. Please check with your accountant. 6. IRS: You cannot deduct job search expenses if you are looking for a job for the first time. For more information about job search expenses, see: IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions » This publication is available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). Company Drug Testing Policy

Company Drug Testing Policy Company Drug Testing Policy Depending upon the state in which you live or the employer for whom you work, you may be required to participate in mandated and/or random drug testing. Eighteen states currently include drug testing provisions in their legal codes. Federal agencies such as the Department of Transportation and the Department of Defense also require the industries, workforces, and contractors which they regulate to implement drug testing programs and policies. Additionally, the federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) requires all operators of aircraft, mass transportation vehicles, railroad equipment, and commercial motor vehicles to be tested for drug and/or alcohol use. Companies who screen for illegal drug and alcohol use may screen job applicants prior to employment. Employees may also be screened for drug and/or alcohol use at random intervals or for cause when stipulated by company policy and where permitted by state law. Companies who drug test typically have a written drug and alcohol policy, distributed to all personnel, explaining when and how job applicants, new employees, and current employees may be tested for illegal drug and/or alcohol use. Sample Company Drug Testing Policy Language As permitted by state law, job applicants may be drug screened as part of the employment hiring process. New employees may be tested before or after interviews and during new hire orientation.   Employees should expect to be drug and/or alcohol tested prior to accepting a promotion when an on-the-job accident occurs, or at any other time as deemed necessary by our Human Resources department or our Environmental Health Safety Manager. Submission to scheduled and random drug testing is a continuing condition of employment for all personnel. Types of Employee Drug Testing Pre-Employment Drug Testing:  All applicants who are offered a job with the company will be tested for drugs as part of the post job offer employment screening process. Each state has its own laws regarding pre-employment drug testing, so it is beneficial to know your rights in your respective state. In some states, for example, drug tests are subject to personal health information laws and are therefore limited in the amount of information they can relay to employers.  Random Drug Testing:  Employees may be selected at random for drug testing at any time. These tests are unannounced and unexpected by employees. According to the Department of Labor, employees are put in a lottery-like testing pool and are randomly selected. Often, the selection is electronic to ensure that the employees were in fact randomly chosen. The random selection process also creates an equal chance for all employees to be picked for testing. Random drug testing has little to no advanced notice, which is an ef fective deterrent to employee drug use.  For Cause Drug Tests:  Employees may be required to submit to a drug test if the company believes they have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the job, if unexcused absence from work or lateness is an issue, or if performance appears to be impacted by drug or alcohol abuse. For cause drug testing is not just to test for drug use on the job, but also determines use during off-work hours and/or at home.Post-Accident Drug Test:  Any employee involved in an on-the-job accident or injury may be tested for drug or alcohol use. These accidents can include driver negligence, a workplace injury with medical treatment on or away from the scene, disabling damage, or car removal. Any applicant or employee who tests positive for illegal drug use will not be hired or promoted, may be subject to disciplinary action and required to participate in substance abuse counseling, and may be terminated from employment. Refusing an Employment-based Drug Test In the case of a job offer, an employer cannot force you to take a drug test. However, refusing to take the test may result in a rescinded offer of employment. Current employees can also be terminated, demoted, or suspended for refusing a drug test. The information contained in this article is not legal advice and is not a substitute for such advice. State and federal laws change frequently, and the information in this article may not reflect your own state’s laws or the most recent changes to the law.
